Open Question: He doesn't want to date me because of my hearing aids?6 February 2010, 8:36 pmI'd been talking to and becoming friends with this guy at school for almost 1 year. I really liked him and he seemed like he really liked me; always paying me compliments and being very nice and friendly. There was def. chemistry between us. Finally I decided to tell him how I felt. He listened and then said that he was interested in me too, but he said to be honest he doesn't want to have an actual relationship because I wear hearing aids.
My hearing loss is mild to moderate and I've worn hearing aids since I was 6. I am very well adjusted and most people never know I have hearing aids. This guy had known that I wear hearing aids and said he was OK with it when we first met.
I reminded him of that and he said he didn't mind having FRIENDS who wear hearing aids, but he couldn't DATE someone with them because he said hearing aids are unsightly and he was afraid of passing hearing loss on to his kids, it's all about survival of the fittest. I said it wasn't genetic and no one else in my family has a hearing loss and he said: "you never know, the only way we're going to get rid of these conditions is to quit passing them on." I asked him how could he say such a thing and he said he's done more than most guys would have, according to him most guys would not even be friends with a girl with hearing aids.
He was the first guy I thought I had a chance with. I'm so confused because he was so NICE to me the entire time we'd been friends so this seemed to come out of no where. He's helped me through some big things. When he told me he couldn't date me because of my hearing aids he was speaking in a logical, rational, calm tone so it sounded like he was being very reasonable. I don't know what to think anymore. Is it true that guys won't want girls with hearing loss because of "bad genes" and the fact that hearing aids are unsightly? What should I say to him? I haven't talked to him since our conversation.
