Open Question: Too embarrassed to wear my hearing aid?
3 August 2010, 7:38 pm

I've been told I have conductive permanent hearing loss this is the result of several ongoing ear infections throughout childhood that has been more persistent in my left ear. Although I already have some hearing loss, it wasn't until just over a year ago another ear infection left me almost completely deaf in my left ear. The specialist told me that my hearing would return after the infection cleared but it didn't and now the specialist has said it's most likely permanent. It was a bit of a blow but I'm not going to waste time feeling sorry for myself as I can still hear out of my right ear. The worst thing for me was having to go through the process of getting a hearing aid as I didn't want to wear one and I can't bring myself to wear it outside of the house. I did try wearing it out but I feel so paranoid. I hate people staring or talking at me like i'm retarded. Which happens more often than you'd think. Its got to the point now where I just don't want to wear it. And I worry I won't ever get a girlfriend or boyfriend because of it.(I'm Bi)  People learn to live with it perfectly well and I feel bad bitching when others just get on with it. But I can't seem to come to terms with the thing. There's no way I can look cool wearing it. Getting over myself is easier said than done.
