Tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) is the name of this concept and has been around for about 20 years. While the theory does have a certain following, it's basis is wild conjectures based on pseudo-scientific "facts" that have yet to be proven. It's quite telling that the official organization for tinnitus sufferers, the American Tinnitus Association, does not advocate or even discuss TRT anywhere on their website.
